Increase in domestic workers’ wages effective 1 December | 8 December 2014

The office of Labour Minister Mildred Oliphant has announced that, effective 1 December 2014 to 30 November 2015, there will be a wage increase for domestic workers in line with the new approved minimum wage. The move is seen as part of Government’s objective to protect workers in South Africa in employment sectors vulnerable to exploitation and not covered by trade unions.

Domestic workers working more than 27 ordinary hours per week
• Major metropolitan areas:
Hourly rate R10.95 Weekly rate R476.68 Monthly rate R2,065.47
• Other areas:
Hourly rate R9.30 Weekly rate R418.32 Monthly rate R1,812.57

Domestic workers working 27 ordinary hours or less per week
• Major metropolitan areas:
Hourly rate R12.40 Weekly rate R334.74 Monthly rate R1,450.33
• Other areas:
Hourly rate R10.98 Weekly rate R296.35 Monthly rate R1,284.09
